Fantastic island destinations in South America

“Island vacation” – those 2 words immediately conjure up images of brilliant azure waters, lush green vegetation, and sun-drenched sandy beaches.

“Island vacation” – those 2 words immediately conjure up images of brilliant azure waters, lush green vegetation, and sun-drenched sandy beaches. For globetrotters (or in this case, island-hoppers) in search of the perfect island vacation destination, South America suffers no shortage of these retreats. Here we highlight our favorites.

Galapagos Islands – Ecuador

The Galapagos Islands recently made TripAdvisor’s list of “10 must-see islands,” and for good reason. Whether on a Galapagos cruise or an island hopping tour, a visit to this archipelago entails an up-close encounter with rare species, such as waved albatross, marine iguanas, and land tortoises, that have become specially adapted to conditions on this volcanic landscape. The perfect destination for scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, and a variety of land tours, travelers of all types can find their own way to discover the Galapagos Islands’ exceptional environment.

Easter Island – Chile

Also included on TripAdvisor’s top 10 list, Easter Island, lying 2,180 miles (3,510 km) off the coast of Chile, is one of the most isolated places on earth with a fascinating human history. Monumental moai dot the landscape, clear blue swells crash onto the island’s shore, and the sun rises and sets over extinct volcanic craters. Intrigued by the statues, travelers become spell-bound by the living culture of the island. February is an ideal time to organize a trip to Chile and Easter Island: islanders celebrate Tapati Rapa Nui, a 10-day festival honoring native culture with dancing, singing, food, and ancient sports competitions.

Florianopolis – Brazil

The rising city of Florianopolis is quickly becoming an ideal spot for a Brazil vacation, as it combines the comforts of a top beach resort with the amenities of a wholly modern metropolis. Amazing restaurants, a vibrant nightlife, and excellent shopping will keep travelers busy. The main attraction, however, is the surf and the sun, as Florianopolis boasts over 40 beaches and coves available for surfing, windsurfing, sunbathing, fishing, scuba diving, and more. A sailing tour is a great way to see more of this spectacular island destination.

Lake Titicaca – Peru & Bolivia

Not all islands are bordered by oceans: Lake Titicaca, sitting at an altitude of 12,397 feet (3,809 meters) above sea level and surrounded by the mighty Andes, hosts several islands on its waters. Among these are the floating islands of Uros; using totora reeds that grow on the lake, the Uros community weaves the islands, as well as churches, school, and houses, by hand. On other islands such as Taquile, Amantani, and Isla del Sol, travelers can hike trails to ancient archaeological sites or visit native communities famed for their gloriously woven textiles. Meanwhile, the luxurious hotels on Lake Titicaca are the perfect place to relax before or after a trip to Machu Picchu.
