Why travel to El Calafate

Beautifully situated in the heart of the rugged Patagonia region, almost 2,000 miles (3,000 km) from Buenos Aires, El Calafate is the true starting point for any epic Patagonian vacation. Surrounded by beautiful lakes, snow-capped mountains, and gigantic glaciers, this quaint town is known as the gateway to the Glaciares National Park. El Calafate, perfect base to launch tours into the park, welcomes visitors in its boutique hotels and delicious restaurants after a long day of trekking, or sightseeing in this wintery wonderland.
Glaciares National Park is the main attraction in this area and it forms part of the Patagonian Continental Ice Field—this is where 13 glaciers descend on the Atlantic side to flow into the Viedma and Argentino lakes. The layout of this wild terrain makes it one of the most unusual national parks in the world. Particularly impressive is a tour of the Perito Moreno glacier, a World Natural Heritage Site. Often times part of this glacier break off and crash into the water below—a remarkable thing to witness.
What to do in El Calafate

City Tour. Although El Calafate mainly serves as a base for exploring the nearby park, the town has a few attractions that are noteworthy. Among these is the brand new and very interesting Glaciarium, or Museum of Ice. Beautiful photographic displays, simulation of glaciers, and documentaries are found in this excellent museum. Nature and animal lovers can also visit the beautiful Laguna Nimez Reserve, a hidden gem located within walking distance from El Calafate, where there are plenty of opportunities for bird watching.
Los Glaciares National Park. Rightfully known as the “National Capital of Glaciers,” El Calafate’s main attraction is Los Glaciers National Park. Encompassing an unbelievable 8,500 square miles, the park features two of Argentina’s largest lakes: Lake Argentino and Lake Viedma. Almost half of the park is covered by ice fields containing more than 45 major glaciers. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981, the park attracts numerous tourists who wish to climb or trek the area’s most famous peaks: Cerro Torre and Mount Fitz Roy.
When to visit El Calafate

The high season here lasts roughly from October to April, then virtually the entire town and its services shut down during winter. The best time to enjoy the vivid scenery of Los Glaciares National Park is outside the peak months of January and February, when accommodation and boats are most crowded.

I have come back from Argentina with lots of unforgettable memories and nice pictures. The trip was wonderful. On-the-ground transportation was hassle-free, and I was lucky that in-bound traffic was on-time as well. Natural wonders in Argentina are really breathtaking and can hardly be found in our part of the world. If any of my friends is planning to go to South America, I will surely recommend your company to them.
