Salvador de Bahia is a vibrant hub of African influence, as it was once the center of the former African slave trade. The city is also known world-wide for its wild festivals and sparkling beaches, making it an ideal destination for travelers looking to combine culture and relaxation on their Brazil vacation.
Salvador de Bahia boasts a fascinating past. In addition to its role in the slave trade, it was the second largest city in the Portuguese Empire, after the capital, Lisbon. It was also the former capital of Brazil, until it was replaced in 1763.
Today, Salvador de Bahia is home to the largest collection of Baroque architecture in Latin America, with beautiful old mansions and gold-ornamented churches. The layout of the city is also interesting, as it is divided into upper and lower sectors, connected by electric elevators.
