San Pedro de Atacama Travel

Spewing geysers, green lagoons, impressive landscapes, and Chile's largest salt flat are all within easy access of the desert outpost of San Pedro de Atacama.

A pre-cordillera oasis village, San Pedro de Atacama has a local population of about 1,000 inhabitants.  The village is the perfect starting point for your Chile tour as it is set amidst the harsh, lonesome beauty of the Atacama Desert. San Pedro boasts unique geological formations within biking distance, but is mainly utilized as the starting point for longer excursions to the high plains to discover unique wildlife. The Tatio Geysers, an amazing geothermal field located at 14,764ft (4,500m) above sea level and surrounded by volcanoes, are also nearby.

“Once they are here, travelers find it difficult to leave this exceptional scenery, beautiful in its vast and desolate space. The Atacama Desert claims to be the driest place on Earth and offers a rare and spectacular beauty that is unmatched anywhere else in the world.”

The central area of the desert is so dry that objects have remained fossilized for centuries. Far from lacking in culturally enticing landmarks, the evidence of ancient cultures can be seen in the giant petroglyphs, which cover the hills of the region’s landscape. The spectacular Valle de la Luna, one of the driest places on earth, boasts astonishing lunar landscapes with various stone and sand formations as well as a beautiful range of colors and textures which make for extraordinary sunset views.

Despite the merciless climate, water dripping from thawing snow in the mountains has allowed small settlements to survive and maintain their traditional customs as if suspended in time.

The perfect place to start your exploration of the vast Atacama, San Pedro will provide you with a variety of cafes, restaurants, and accommodations for your Atacama travel. The stunning beauty of the Atacama’s salt flats, hidden lagoons, and desert landscapes are sure to be the highlight of your Chile tour.

Thanks for putting together a great itinerary. I had a fabulous time. Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Santiago de Chile each were exciting and interesting in their own way and greatly exceeded my expectations!

We are back in Malta! We would like to thank you and your team for a most enjoyable vacation. Considering the many countries (Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil) we visited, and the 14 flights we took, all went well.
Oliver, Malta.

John Picture, Chile Travel, Chile For Less

Our trip was incredibly successful in three different countries: Chile, Brazil and Peru. And in every instance, the coordination of details and execution were impeccably accurate regardless of the country visited. Success at every stage was achieved regardless of location, the weather, the country and/or the time of day or night we traveled and were sight-seeing.
John, Golden, CO.

What to do in San Pedro de Atacama

Laguna Verde: Across the Bolivian border, about 40 miles from San Pedro de Atacama, is the Green Lagoon, an enchanting, emerald 10-square-mile body of water. Like an immense green mirror, the lagoon throws off a reflection of the Licancabur Volcano, which rises almost 19,000 feet above sea level. This makes for a magical setting and may be the reason why the area was considered sacred by the pre-Columbian inhabitants of the territory.

Tatio Geysers: Located about 50 miles (82 km) away from San Pedro de Atacama are the geysers at El Tatio, rumored to be the highest in the world and one of the desert’s most awe-inspiring son et lumière spectacles. At dawn, the vapor from dozens of fumaroles spring up from the mineral heart of the desert, then decompose into thousands of colors spread across the sky. After witnessing this surreal spectacle, submerge yourself in the naturally heated, emerald-green thermal baths where you can relax your muscles while you watch the geysers. The best time to see El Tatio is at dawn, so tours leave San Pedro around 03:00 AM. On the way back to your San Pedro hotel, try to stay awake and keep your eyes open to spot the flamingos and llamas that call this area home.

Valley of the Moon: In an impressive contrast, sunset in the Valley of the Moon offers the most perfect and soothing combination of silence, solace, and aridness. For thousands of years the wind has carved strange, desolate, stone shapes in the valley and, in the diaphanous atmosphere of the altiplano, these stand out sharply against the startlingly blue sky. Bus tours leave in time to catch the sunset, but if you are of the more adventurous type, mountain biking is another option.

Thermal Pools: If you’re looking for some relaxation after a rough day of biking or sightseeing, a dip in the thermal baths of Puritama offers the perfect opportunity to unwind. Heated by underground geothermal activity, the pools have a pleasant temperature ranging between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

San Pedro de Atacama Salt Lake: Both the Meñique and Miscanti are fed from water sources far below the surface of the earth, and both attract a wide array of wildlife. Abundant flamingos with their pink figures are a stark contrast to the surrounding snowy slopes, brilliantly reflected in the waters. Another lagoon at Chaxas is famous for housing three varieties of flamingos, and a range of other bird species that nest here in the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos. From the lagoon, it is possible to reach the Salar de San Pedro de Atacama, a huge lake hidden under a thick white mantle of salt (the largest salt flat in Chile). Don’t forget to stop in Toconao, a charming Andean village boasting a beautiful church bell tower and lovely narrow alleys filled with small artisan workshops.

When to visit San Pedro de Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama can be visited year-round. In the higher elevations bordering the Andes it can get cloudy and colder during winter time, so the best time to visit is in the warmer months, between September and February.
