La Serena Travel

La Serena is one of the most beautiful cities in Chile, and boasts picturesque churches, streets flooded with white-washed neo-colonial architecture, sandy beaches, and some of the clearest skies in the world. This lovely city is located in the Elqui Valley, one of the most famous places in the world for astronomical observations due to the thin, dry atmosphere in northern Chile.  Only a 45 minute flight from Santiago, La Serena offers travelers a relaxing holiday, but also a wealth of opportunity to explore this fascinating region.La Serena Travel Package, Chile Travel, Chile For Less

La Serena is the third oldest city in Chile, beaten in antiquity only by Santiago and Arica. Luckily, the country and the inhabitants of La Serena are eager to maintain the existing charm.  Architects may only build edifices which fit in with the surrounding architecture and must restrict the height to fewer than 8 stories. Built on a hill and home to small gardens with carved statues in addition to its beautiful architecture, it is no wonder most travelers become smitten with this cute coastal town.

Not only does La Serena offer the chance to relax, but the city boasts a large university and a variety of activities to keep people entertained.  There are museums to visit, restaurants to try, and music venues throughout the day and well into the night. This area is also known for its pisco production. A must-try cocktail, if you are so inclined, is the famous pisco sour, a delicious and refreshing concoction made from pisco brandy, lime juice, sugar, and egg white.

Although Chile is not famous as a beach destination, La Serena provides travelers access to the most popular and lovely among them. Travelers and locals alike walk the famous Avenida del Mar (Sea Avenue), a walkway which takes them by 12 beaches ideal for sunbathing.  The water is slightly rough and although swimming is not recommended, water sports are popular.  Those looking for a tranquil beach for swimming need only head to the nearby beaches of Coquimbo, where tranquil seas are contained by horseshoe-shaped sandy beaches.

Thanks for putting together a great itinerary. I had a fabulous time. Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Santiago de Chile each were exciting and interesting in their own way and greatly exceeded my expectations!

We are back in Malta! We would like to thank you and your team for a most enjoyable vacation. Considering the many countries (Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil) we visited, and the 14 flights we took, all went well.
Oliver, Malta.

John Picture, Chile Travel, Chile For Less

Our trip was incredibly successful in three different countries: Chile, Brazil and Peru. And in every instance, the coordination of details and execution were impeccably accurate regardless of the country visited. Success at every stage was achieved regardless of location, the weather, the country and/or the time of day or night we traveled and were sight-seeing.

What to do in La Serena

La Serena City Tour: In the center of town, clustered around the attractive Plaza de Armas, sit most of the churches, official buildings, and famous mansions that definitely deserve a visit. You can’t help but notice both the intricately-constructed Iglesia Catedral and Santo Domingo Church. The latter has a lovely garden and statues of sea lions at play. La Serena has a total of 30 churches and it’s easy to fill an afternoon strolling around and peeking inside some of these beautiful buildings.

Casa González Vida was once the residence of the former president and is now home to the Museo Historico Regional which houses modern art as well as many historic documents belonging to the city and González Vida’s history.

Stop at La Recova, a bustling handicrafts market with upstairs restaurants serving great seafood.  After your meal and a bit of shopping you can head to Museo Arqueológico which has a beautiful exhibit featuring potteries from the Molle and Diaguita Indians.

La Serena also has some lovely parks only one or two blocks from the Plaza de Armas, such as Parque Pedro de Valdivia and Parque Japones. Another nice walk is a stroll along Avenida Francisco de Aguirre, known as Alameda among locals. This lovely boulevard is lined with statues and stretches from the center of town to the lighthouse on the coast.

Valle del Elqui & Stargazing: Ascend the lush valleys and cultivated fields along the banks of the Elqui Valley, and stop in some of the myriad charming villages on your way: Algarrobito with its olive trees and beautiful church, Altovalsol , and El Molle where you can admire pre-Hispanic archeological remains. You can also visit one of the Pisco distilleries, and learn all there is to know about the process of creating this traditional liquor.

It would be a shame to come to the Elqui Valley and not visit one of the four observatories that provide a glimpse into our universe. Reservations must be made in advance, so make sure you let your travel advisor know you are interested in visiting an observatory as soon as you decide to visit Chile. El Tololo is the closest of the four, at 87 km away from La Serena, but La Silla, Las Campanas, and Mamalluca are great observatories as well. Mamalluca is the only observatory that allows travelers to look through a telescope.

Reserva Nacional Pinguino Humboldt: This national park is composed of three islands, located some 70 miles north of La Serena, and is one of the best places in the region to observe marine wildlife including penguins, dolphins, sea lions, and otters. Travelers can disembark on Isla Damas to explore the beaches and even camp.

Take the Trans Atacama Train: If you plan on visiting the geoglyphs and the ghost town, consider taking this train that takes you to both locations, and allows you to eat lunch at 6,500 ft above sea level while enjoying spectacular views and a folkloric show.  The train only runs one way, but a bus will be waiting to take you back.

When to visit La Serena

La Serena enjoys a fairly moderate climate, and the Elqui Valley has close to 300 sunny days per year. Although there is no bad time to visit, the best time depends on your interests.

From late July to October, travelers have a chance to see one of the most beautiful natural displays in Chile. Desierto Florido is a phenomenon where all the wild flowers of the desert bloom at once, creating an intricate and varied carpet of bright colors across the desert floor.

January and February are the cloudiest months, so if you are coming specifically for stargazing, avoid this time.

March and April see cooler temperatures, lower prices, and fewer tourists, making this is an optimum time for a relaxing holiday.
