Diane and Jim Anderson in Lima Dear Chile For Less,

We appreciated the ground staff arranged by Latin America for Less in the five different countries (Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Ecuador) we visited, who, without fail, arranged for us to meet and depart on eleven separate flights at all hours of the day. Having personal transfers from airports to hotels (and vice versa) and to be picked up and delivered at our hotels before and after tours took so much of the stress and uncertainty out of the trip.

Diane and Jim, Victoria, BC Canada.

Puerto Varas Tour

Magical Lake District: Puerto Varas, Chiloe Island & Osorno Volcano
(4 days/3 nights)
From $899 €788 £631
Puerto Varas Tour, Chile Travel, Chile For Less

With its spectacular arrangement of deep blue mountain lakes, snow-capped volcanoes, and pristine forests, Chile’s Lake District is a must-see for any traveler to Chile. Often compared to the Alps in Switzerland, Chile’s Lake District not only has the same pristine beauty, but also boasts its own peculiar charm. With mysterious islands full of legends, traditional German architecture, splashing waterfalls, and breathtaking volcanoes, the entire region offers countless opportunities to explore. Begin your journey into this striking region from the small town of Puerto Varas, a gateway to some of the most spectacular parks and sceneries.

Puerto Varas is a friendly town and an ideal base for venturing into the area’s natural beauty. Ideally located on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, the second largest lake in Chile and one of the highlights of the entire district, Puerto Varas boasts a unique setting surrounded by impressive volcanoes and the shimmering waters of the lake. Away from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Montt, this residential town is characterized by charming streets, wood-shingled homes and a rose-encircled plaza. It has been given the lovely nickname of “City of Roses” because of the hundreds of rose bushes lining its streets. Puerto Varas is also the starting point for many excursions in the region and activities such as trekking, rafting or canyoning.

Climb up to the perfect cone of Volcano Osorno on the eastern edge of the Lake, hike in Chile’s oldest park, Vincente Perez Rosales National Park, covered with lush woodland and filled with mesmerizing lakes, and travel to the mysterious Chiloe archipelago to learn about its fascinating legends and mythology.

You will have the remainder of the afternoon and evening to begin exploring the lovely city of Puerto Varas on your own. Absorb the friendly atmosphere as you stroll down the charming streets, and duck into a local restaurant to try some regional cuisine.  Make sure you head back to your hotel early enough to get some rest before the next day’s exciting adventures.

Day 2: Chiloe Island Tour

Today, after breakfast at your hotel, you will set out on a tour of the mysterious and alluring archipelago of Chiloe. Consisting of one main island known as Chiloe Grande, and numerous islets, the archipelago is not only famous for its lush forests, rolling hillsides and patchwork fields, but also for its legends and rich mythology.

You will first head toward Pargua were you will board a ferry boat taking you across the Chacao Channel to Chiloe Island. Your first stop on the island is the beautiful Caulin Bay, a natural sanctuary with rich wildlife.  Among the various bird species that call this bay home, some endangered species such as the black-necked swans and Chilean flamingoes deserve special mention.

Afterward, you will have the chance to taste fresh seafood on a visit to an oyster and scallop culture, before continuing on to the small town of Ancud along the shore of beautiful Quetalmahue Bay. You will have some free time to explore Ancud on your own and have lunch in the lively port, before visiting the Museo Regional with its interesting collection highlighting the early history of Chiloe. Admire the Fortress San Antonio which dominates the port, and wander through the bustling local market where you can browse the numerous stalls.

Later on, you will head toward Peñihuil Bay, where various islets are home to large colonies of Magellan and Humboldt penguins nesting from September to March. Board a small boat that will take you up to the islets for a closer observation of the fascinating species in their natural habitat.

After a day full exploring this region, you will be taken back to Puerto Varas. The evening is free for you to explore the town on your own or enjoy a quiet relaxing evening in your comfortable hotel.

Day 3: Petrohué Falls & Osorno Volcano Tour

Today, another exciting adventure awaits you with a tour to the splendid Petrohue Falls located in the Vincente Perez Rosales National Park, followed by a visit to the majestic Osorno Volcano. You will drive the road along Lake Llanquihue, the largest in Chile and third largest natural lake in South America. On the way, you will pass by the traditional German architecture of the old houses built by the first German settlers.  You will also have the chance to see the picturesque village of Ensenada, as well as the Pescado River, Puerto Arthur and Los Riscos.

In Ensenada, the road runs inland to the mountain range and passes by the magnificent Petrohue Falls, a cascade succession of emerald water. You will take a walk through the Coigüe trees in Vincente Perez Rosales Park towards Verde Lagoon and finally up to Osorno Volcano.  From the volcano’s crater (3,280ft) you will enjoy the most spectacular views of the entire Petrohue river valley, Andes mountain range, and Calbuco Volcano.

Later in the afternoon, you will return to Puerto Varas and have the rest of the evening free to rest in your hotel or relax in the pleasant atmosphere of this picturesque lake town.
