Puerto Natales Travel

The picturesque town of Puerto Natales is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts waiting to visit one of the continent’s most dramatic national parks, the breathtaking Torres del Paine. Spread along the sloping coast of the Señoret Canal, nearly all visitors to the park find themselves spending at least one night here in Puerto Natales.

The town itself has a certain charm, with its cozy center lined with row after row of weather-beaten tin and wooden houses. The main attraction is of course its stunning location, with grand views over the grassy peninsula and glacier-capped peaks in the distance. From May to September, the town virtually goes into hibernation, but come October, the streets begin to fill with travelers decked out in parkas and hiking boots on their way to the park.

“The National Park Torres del Paine is, without doubt, one of the most spectacular national parks in South America. With its snow-capped mountain peaks, cascading rivers and waterfalls, glaciers and mirrored lake, Torres del Paine National Park offers some of the most impressive natural sights in the world.”

A world biosphere reserve, the national park has a huge variety of plant and animal species which, in addition to its incredibly beautiful setting, have made it an almost unequalled Chile destination for hikers, backpackers, ecology-lovers and adventure sportsmen alike

Thanks for putting together a great itinerary. I had a fabulous time. Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Santiago de Chile each were exciting and interesting in their own way and greatly exceeded my expectations!

We are back in Malta! We would like to thank you and your team for a most enjoyable vacation. Considering the many countries (Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil) we visited, and the 14 flights we took, all went well.
Oliver, Malta.

John Picture, Chile Travel, Chile For Less

Our trip was incredibly successful in three different countries: Chile, Brazil and Peru. And in every instance, the coordination of details and execution were impeccably accurate regardless of the country visited. Success at every stage was achieved regardless of location, the weather, the country and/or the time of day or night we traveled and were sight-seeing.
John, Golden, CO.

What to do in Puerto Natales

Torres del Paine National Park: Torres del Paine is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve full of glaciers and icebergs, turquoise lakes and flower-filled pastoral valleys.  Regarded as a must-see destination on a Chile vacation, the park is home to one of the most striking landscapes in the world - the unusual granite mountain peaks of Torres towering over the park at 8,500 ft high. Enormous glaciers mark the northern boundary of the park and travelers can witness ice splitting from the green and blue cliffs and crashing into the lakes below. The park is also home to unique wildlife, from guanacos to ñandus (a relative of the Ostrich), as well as hundreds of bird species including the Condor.

Hiking trails can be found all around the park, with lodges, campgrounds, and transportation on most trailheads. Trails are safe and easy to follow, making them completely manageable for the average trekker. You can choose between camping, spending the night at the refugios, small basic hostels with a few dorms, or returning to your Puerto Natales hotel at the end of the day. Depending on the trail, treks can go from four to six days.

Glacier Serrano & Balmaceda: This is an opportunity to sail through the Ultima Esperanza Inlet observing an environment surrounded by hills and forests, with sea lions romping on the rocks, before reaching the colony of cormorants, located in the cliffs, where thousands of these birds make their homes. The boat sails close to the Glacier Balmaceda and stops at the Glacier Serrano. Travelers can disembark and trek through the forest until they reach the rim of the lagoon scattered with floating ice.

Grey Glacier: Grey Glacier is the largest glacier that can be visited on a regular tour in the park.  Explore this natural marvel, which constitutes the end of the Southern Ice Field, by sailing through the glacial lake on the Grey II vessel. From the deck of the ship you will be able to appreciate the intricate crevasses and peaks of the glacier, admiring its blue-tinted ice cliffs and its pristine beauty. Keep in mind that this tour depends on the weather as there are times that large parts of the glacier collapse and fill the lake.

It is also a great trekking area if you want to get away from the crowds, with a 5-hour trek from Guarderia Grey to Lago Pingo. This is one of the best routes for bird watching in the entire park.

Kayak the Rio Serrano: Whether you are already an avid kayaker or want to try the sport for the first time, this spectacular Patagonia setting is the perfect place for a multi-day kayaking adventure. Sitting in your kayak and gliding through the cool river amidst the absolutely spectacular backdrop of grassy fields dotted with wild flowers and towering peaks is an experience most travelers treasure. It takes three days to paddle the Serrano River snaking through the mountains from Torres del Paine back down to Puerto Natales.  Travelers can camp at Lake Grey, formed by the runoff from the largest glacier in southern Chile.

When to visit Puerto Natales

With its low altitude and relatively close location to the Pacific Ocean, Puerto Natales enjoys a very particular microclimate. Although the weather is generally temperate, it can be unpredictable and travelers should bring good wind and rain gear to protect themselves against the elements. More importantly though, do not dishearten when rain threatens because the weather here changes often.

Torres del Paine can best be visited during Chilean summer: from December to March. However, autumn is especially beautiful with the leaves changing color, and the spring months of October and November bring thousands of wild flowers.  During the winter, although it is cold, the scenery is stunning and there are relatively few tourists.
