Santiago Travel

Set in the spectacular landscape of snow-capped Andean peaks, the cosmopolitan city of Santiago is alive with excitement. The vibrant Chilean capital offers no end of opportunities for the visitor, as it is bursting at the seams with museums, excellent restaurants, frenetic nightlife, and some of the best shopping in South America.

“Santiago is one of the continent’s most important cultural and commercial centers, a 24 hour metropolis that is home to over a third of all Chileans.”

The perfect place to get to know this up-and-coming country, Santiago is guaranteed to captivate and excite, leaving lifelong memories of your unique Chile travel experience. With a population of over 6 million, Santiago has grown to become the political, economic and cultural center of Chile.

On a clear day, marvel at the breathtaking views from Cerro San Cristobal, a peak in northern Santiago that provides sweeping vistas of the city. You can also uncover Santiago’s colorful side in the bustling central market where delicious restaurants are tucked alongside rows of fresh fruit, vegetables, and fish.

Travelers looking for a little culture can pay a visit to one of Santiago’s excellent museums, or enjoy an evening tango or folkloric show.  However, one of the best features of Santiago is the numerous wild landscapes that surround this bustling city.

Santiago sits roughly in the center of Chile, which means travelers have easy access to world class skiing in the Andes, the valleys that produce award winning wines, and the seemingly endless stretch of Pacific coastline that crashes onto the beaches of the world’s longest country.

Thanks for putting together a great itinerary. I had a fabulous time. Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Santiago de Chile each were exciting and interesting in their own way and greatly exceeded my expectations!
Dennis Burns, New Mexico, USA.

Oliver Picture, Chile Travel, Chile For Less

We are back in Malta! We would like to thank you and your team for a most enjoyable vacation. Considering the many countries (Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil) we visited, and the 14 flights we took, all went well.
Oliver, Malta.

John Picture, Chile Travel, Chile For Less

Our trip was incredibly successful in three different countries: Chile, Brazil and Peru. And in every instance, the coordination of details and execution were impeccably accurate regardless of the country visited. Success at every stage was achieved regardless of location, the weather, the country and/or the time of day or night we traveled and were sight-seeing.
John, Golden, CO.

What to do in Santiago

Santiago Tour: Visit the culturally and historically rich city center, where the most important buildings are located, including La Moneda Palace, the current seat of the government. The Plaza de Armas is the main square of the city, and is always a good place to people-watch as families and couples leisurely stroll through the park while street performers entertain small crowds.

The conical hill of Cerro San Cristobal is the 2nd highest point in the entire city where you will find a statue of the Virgin Mary. Take the funicular up the hill for a spectacular view of the Andes and the Pacific.

At the foot of San Cristobal lies the city’s bohemian district, Barrio Bellavista, where picturesque streets are lined with colorful architecture and small cafes and restaurants. It is no wonder Nobel Prize winning poet Pablo Neruda decided to build one of his homes here. While you are strolling through the charming streets, scout the area for a good place to eat, as this barrio is famous for its delicious restaurants as well as its lively pubs.

North of the broad avenue Alameda, Santiago’s main artery running through the city, is Barrio Brazil, a more tranquil area rich in colonial architecture as well as home to a lively nightlife with many underground bars, clubs and restaurants. Stroll down the narrow, cobbled streets lined with elegant rococo and German Gothic style houses to reach Plaza Brasil in the heart of the barrio.

Winery Tour: Located in the heart of the wine valley, Santiago offers easy access to a variety of vineyards in almost every direction.  Just 16 miles to the south of Santiago is the magnificent Maipo Valley, the oldest viticulture area in Chile.

Chile's soaring international reputation for wine is greatly due to the success of the Concha y Toro Winery in the village of Pirque, southeast of Santiago. Established in 1883, Chile's largest winery is often strangely ignored by the majority of foreign visitors to Santiago.

Pablo Neruda Museum in Isla Negra: West of Santiago is the coastal village of Isla Negra where Nobel Prize poet Pablo Neruda’s favorite house is located. Take an informative guided tour through the museum and the surrounding areas to really appreciate the life and works of this gregarious and ingenious Chilean poet.

Maipo Valley: Santiago's closest wilderness is the Maipo Valley, which begins near Puente Alto, 16 miles (25 km) southeast of the city and stretches up to the high-altitude border with Argentina.

In addition to the wine, the valley offers spectacular Andean scenery and thermal pools to those who venture near the top of the valley. Take walks in the mountain, go rafting, horseback riding or simply rest under the trees by the river. You can enjoy a full day in nature and be back in your comfortable Santiago hotel by nightfall.

When to visit Santiago

Santiago’s temperate, Mediterranean climate allows comfortable travel year-round. The heat during the long dry summers can sometimes be oppressive. The clearest and bluest skies are found between September and April, when stunning views of the nearby mountains are ever present.

It is easy to time your trip to cater to your interests. Fall is an especially good time to visit the vineyards for the grape harvest, while prime Chile ski season is from July to September. If you plan on hitting the beaches of Viña del Mar, it is best to do so between December and February.
